How do the categories and major emphases connect with each other?

We dedicated time today to discussing the idea that people are key to studying social studies. During the course of our conversation, we organized human interaction into four categories and 3 major areas of  emphasis. In 50 words, summarize our class discussion.

We need to know the history of people and where they come from in order to define how we believe and act toward others. This is what we want to teach our students - how to be impartial; be informed so that they can make their own opinions and be able to justify them.

  2. The four areas of how people interact seem to be a progression of knowledge. Students should move from one category to the other in sucession and then learn to connect all together in the future.

Social Studies is interesting because it's a story and it deals with real people, which makes it relatable to everyone in some way.

The four categories are the overall goal in teaching social studies. The breakdown in emphasis is the actual learning process of the students that teachers hope to achieve. As teachers we need to teach the skills so our students can develop the good values.

Ultimately, people are what makes up the world. Our actions, behaviors, and the way we handle situations affect the world that we live in. As future teachers, it's important to take social studies as a tool to teach little people the knowledge, skills, and values to make this world a better place to live in.

  5. Once people learn that "citizenship", "global awareness," "history and social science education," and "reflective thinking and problemsolving" are intertwined, the knowledge, skills and values are the way to apply the 4 interactions and makes teaching social studies more meaningful.

People are the key to studying social stud ies we are involved in citizenship, global awareness, history and social science, and reflective thinking. Even though we may have different ways of implementing these ideas. By practicing these ideas early on in the classroom we can better understand how to work together.

  7. Social studies is like going fishing in a boat. You cast out the net and you bring it in. In the net are all kinds of different fish - the fish represent the different subcategories that fall under Social Studies. Then the emphases are the outline for how you will teach each of the four categories.

  8. The knowledge is acquired within the 4 categories. Ten we, as teachers, need to show the students the skills to be able to use this knowledge to create good core values.

There are many different ways people interact. It starts with their culture and progresses through knowledge, skills, and values they aquire. The more they obtain the easier it becomes to interact with others.

  12. The three major areas of emphases build on one another. The 4 categories of how people interact will lead one to become a knowledgable and effective citizen. From there you will have the knoweledge, skills and values to be a good individual.

-Social Studies is made up of people and how they interact with one another.

-There are 4 categories of how they can interact with one another...
(Citizenship Edu., Global Awarenesss Edu.,History & Social Science Edu., Reflective thinking and Problem Solving Edu.)

-As teachers we must concentrate on not only the knowlegde of these categories but also HOW you gather the knowledge. You must also establish positive values outside the classroom.

  15. There are different ways to decide to teach social studies, as well as two views as to being hands on and factual. Each category discussed will be able to build upon each other and in each category all three emphasis are key in being able to interact with our communities in the best fashion.

  16. We think that the categories and emphases all build together. As people learn they gain the skill and ability to relfect on the information on a local and then global level.

  17. People who become better citizens have a global awareness, knowlege of history and can reflect upon these things to be functional members of society. They develop as citizens by searching for the knowledge, applying thier skills, beliefs within their community.

  18. you need the three major emphasis to be able to participate or interact in the four categories. for example, if you need a stop sign in your neighborhood; you need the knowledge to get the stop sign, the skill to go and get the signatures, and values to make a good decision.

  19. We cannot teach the content in social studies, until we have a full understanding of the event or idea happening in the past ourselves. There is more to social studies than what is printed in the books. We need to know all the facts by gathering ALL of the specifics.
We need to teach the students how to gather facts and information.
