What were your impressions of NCSS Expectations of Excellence?

Now that you have read the first part of the NCSS Expectations of Excellence, explain how this document defines Social Studies. Be sure to discuss the two main characteristics that distinguish social studies as a field of study (civic competence and multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary). Finally, identify at least one aspect of this document that needs to be updated. Be sure to identify the names of those who are posting.

  1. Psycology, economics, business communication, sociology, history, geography, and many others are related to social studies. Any subject that relates to people or our world could be arguably under social studies.

  3. Civil Competance: being able to contribute and live in american society and culture by being involved in their own community and knowing about current events and happenings.

    Multidisiciplinary and interdisciplinary: Connecting different themes with one main idea. Having different views to be able to solve one main problem or issue.

    Article should state ways to engage students. More than just reading text. Teachers should find ways to make material relateable and interesting to all students.

  4. The NCSS defines social studies as the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence.

    Multidiciplinary - related to other subjects. For example, literature is a discipline of social studies because we can dray references from history.

    Civi competence - being able to function in society and working to make a difference

    Updated - give examples of how to make broad topics more current (through technology, etc)

  5. Civil competence- about being a good citizen, being involved, allows students to understand what is going on in the world around them.

    Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary- encompassing more than just one subject or discipline and making connections between subjects.

    The article could include more technology.

  7. Subjects that fall under SS: history, geography, anthropology, government, race and gender, civics, economics, political science

    Other subjects such as science, math, and Language Arts can be incorporated into social studies.

    NCSS: national Council for the social Studies

    Founded in 1921
    set standards for social studies content
    want to teach people how to be a good American citizen(assimilation)
    wanted to take kids out of the work field and educate them

    Are they still relevant?? Yes as long as they still focus on current events and update when necessary

    Social Studies is used to promote civic competence, supports the coomon good.
    Civil competence- shows students ways to become a good citizen.
    It involves many other subjects, literature, art, math, and many others.
    Article needs include classroom ideas or projects

  9. The definition of social studies is the integrated study of the social science and humanities to promote civic competence. Social studies is a very broad discipline. It covers many things, government, geography, religion, culture, etc. Social studies helps students develop the knowledge skills and values that will enable them to become effective citizens. (civic competence)

    Civil competence- Understanding what society expects and the laws

    Interdisciplinary- Social Studies ties into other subjects

    Multidisciplinary- Everything falls under Social Studies

    Civic competence- understanding what it takes to be a valuable citizen and being a good role model.

    Multidisciplinary- social studies can be connected within all other subject areas in the classroom.

    The article talks about prayer in the schools and we think it is not relevant to teach in the classroom. Some parents may not agree with this topic.

  12. The various disciplines of social studies promote civic competence. Social studies is multidisciplinary in the fact that it involves many different disciplines, but it can also be seen throughout the other subjects. The article needs to be updated with practical ideas of how to incorporate social studies into the curriculum more often.
