Now that you have read the first part of the NCSS Expectations of Excellence, explain how this document defines Social Studies. Be sure to discuss the two main characteristics that distinguish social studies as a field of study (civic competence and multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary). Finally, identify at least one aspect of this document that needs to be updated.

Psycology, economics, business communication, sociology, history, geography, and many others are related to social studies. Any subject that relates to people or our world could be arguably under social studies.

ReplyDeleteMultidisiciplinary and interdisciplinary: Connecting different themes with one main idea. Having different views to be able to solve one main problem or issue.
Article should state ways to engage students. More than just reading text. Teachers should find ways to make material relateable and interesting to all students.

ReplyDeleteMultidiciplinary - related to other subjects. For example, literature is a discipline of social studies because we can dray references from history.
Civi competence - being able to function in society and working to make a difference
Updated - give examples of how to make broad topics more current (through technology, etc)
Civil competence- about being a good citizen, being involved, allows students to understand what is going on in the world around them.

Civil competence- shows students ways to become a good citizen.
It involves many other subjects, literature, art, math, and many others.

The definition of social studies is the integrated study of the social science and humanities to promote civic competence. Social studies is a very broad discipline. It covers many things, government, geography, religion, culture, etc. Social studies helps students develop the knowledge skills and values that will enable them to become effective citizens. Multidisciplinary- social studies can be connected within all other subject areas in the classroom.
The article talks about prayer in the schools and we think it is not relevant to teach in the classroom. Some parents may not agree with this topic.
The various disciplines of social studies promote civic competence. Social studies is multidisciplinary in the fact that it involves many different disciplines, but it can also be seen throughout the other subjects. The article needs to be updated with practical ideas of how to incorporate social studies into the curriculum more often.
