Culture and Society

Teaching students about different cultures must be deeper investigation than studying about food, holidays, and dress. It is imperative that students have are provided a comprehensive framework (or common core foci) by which they can evaluate all cultures. Today we worked with the Framework for Teaching/Learning Culture & Society. Based on our in-class activity, how can you implement this framework to have students investigate cultures (answer in 100 words - and identify yourself by provid your name(s).

  1. One thing that we have learned from the activity in class today, is the fact that people have personal opinions and perspectives about issues and different aspects of various cultures. Communicating with others from different cultures helps us to open up our eyes and realize our differences.

  4. One thing that we have learned is that different cultures have things that are really important to them. People live life the way they feel they have to be to a good citizen. In the world we live in today, there are many perspectives of how we should live. It is getting easier to accept those cultures views and accept them today.

  5. One topic I would like for my students to learn from activities like we did today is that they need to see multiple perspectives even within the same topic. I feel that seeing different points of view will allow the students to better relate to what they are learning and to remember the material longer than just for the test of for the school year.

From this class activity we have learned that it is important to offer resources from multiple perspectives so that students get a well-rounded knowledge base. It is also nice to have different types of resources such as books, videos, pictures, worksheets, artwork etc... It is also important to give students the opportunity to be able to see how people from other cultures relate to them.

  7. Through children's literature and other explorations, children can expand their background knowledge and help to connect their life experiences with those of others around the world. They can then take this knowledge and use it to expand their ideas and perceptions on how to interact with others.

  8. I feel that there are so many different ways to impliment a broader range of information ad manipulatives outside of food, dress, and holidadys. Books are the most importanty of those. Also internet and activities such as crafts that relate to the culture. Also, I think epals would be interesting because students could actually communicate with students from other cultures.

  9. Something that we learned to do in class today was how to use Children's literature to introduce and incorporate learning about other culture's in the classroom. They can learn about other cultures in a safe environment but it is important to allow students to form their own opinions and allow them to voice them. While it is important to be tolerant, we should not sacrifice our morals and opinions for the sake of being "politically correct".

  10. I always felt that media-like television shows, movies can be a method that is entertaining for children. Although it is not alot of time for this type of stuff to be included in class time, students can perhaps be given a set of questions to answer based off of muti-cultural media. I learnedfrom today that teaching cultural and society material does not have to (always)consist of a long drawn out thing. It can be fun and engaging and can be scaffolded which helps students to learn the content at a slower pace.

Depending on the level of the students, we can set up centers to help students investigate different aspects of some cultures.

Form groups to make a role playing presentations for the class on a chosen or assigned culture.

Literature is one of the best ways to introduce a variety of new cultures to students. Students need to be able to discover the similarities and differences of people in other cultures based on everyday life to help students become more tolerant of other cultures. With learning centers, students are able to research cultures and more easily compare it to their culture and others.

  13. You can do a unit on a specific culture and have the students compare it to their own. I.e. Using the conventions and connotations to move into conditioning and comprehension. If this framework is used, students will take more information in and use it to create an informed decision. Therefore, you give the students the opportunity to research the culture to understand the conventions and connotations of it. Then, based on the information received, you can condition the students to think of this culture in a different way. Once they have all on the information, they will be able to comprehend their similarities and differences.

  14. Resources investigated by students should be comprehensive and address "a day in the life of..." type of thing. They should focus on common and current misconceptions so students apply their knowledge to everyday occurrences and not just commit to memory.

By working with a varitey of engaging tasks in order to promote a deeper level of student thinking about culture. Some engaging activites that can be used in the classroom in order to learn different aspects of culture can include centers, having students write their own newspaper clipping and include different elements of culture, and allowing the students to create a graphic organizer in order to define and elaborate information or knowledge about a culture.
