Debate & Deliberation

Debate and Deliberation are great strategies to incorporate into the social studies classroom. Both teach students how to research a topic, formulate/defend a position, and present a point of view. However, both strategies are not exactly the same. Provide a definition that explains their differences.

  1. Deliberation occurs when something needs to be accomplished and people work together through discussion to come to one answer.

Debate occurs when there are two (or more) opposing viewpoints and people go back and forth (sometimes as an argument) to decide which answer is the best.

  2. Debate is an issue that has to have more than one side or position that the students can discuss and explore. In debate students would more than likely be divided into at least two groups that each have a position on the issue. Deliberation is an issue that the whole class can explore together. It doesn't always have to have more than one position students take on it, however it needs to be an issue that students can explore in depth.
