It means that students do not understand that historical leaders did not start out that way. Through their actions they became historical leaders. Through lyrics students can break down historical happenings and see what really went on.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that a lot of students have in common is interest in music; almost everyone listens to some genre of music. Including music in social studies can really play in to your student’s interest and with music it can help students understand and recall things better. Many songs have political standpoints or have lyrics pertaining to certain events in history. If these songs were used in social studies and get students thinking about the connections to what they are studying they could be very beneficial. Students will be more interested and able to use the songs to remember events.
ReplyDeleteStudents think that their voices can't be heard, therefore why care? If you show students music (for their generation) that has a political or historical tone, they can better relate themselves to the issues that face our world today. It's makes them more aware of the issues today.
ReplyDeleteI think this quote saying that people, especially students feel that they have no voice in what happens in the world. They feel powerless dealing with large governments and corporations. By using songs in the classroom, teachers have the opportunity to change these feelings. A lot of the songs that have a social or political message emphasize the importance of standing up for what you believe in and put the focus on individual actions. By listening to these songs students can see that that they do have a voice and that if all individuals would speak up we could make a difference in the world.
ReplyDeleteBasically this quote is saying there are a lot of things in history that are results of individuals standing up for what they believe in to make changes. ReplyDeleteThe quote is saying that students do not understand that they have the potential to become policy makers and challengers of world matters. As teachers we show students many "old" examples of people who have prompted change. We have to show students that the ideas of changing the world is not just done by people from history, but that those in the present have a responsibility too. By using lyrics we can bring policy making to a more current idea for students

ReplyDeleteChildren are constantly told that they are to young for this, that, and the other. Therefore they don't feel that their opinions are important until they become adults. Students listen to music all the time, so bringing this activity into the room, it helps the students to connect what is going on. there are great stories within or behind music lyrics. Students have some background knowledge that they can contribute.
ReplyDeleteMusic is something that every student will come into contact with; if you use it in the class you will be tapping into the interest and have a hook that will peak their attention. They even have songs out there that are made from popular music with educational information replacing the original words. I will use music in my class.
ReplyDeleteMusic only seems to be incorporated in very young classrooms but I feel like it needs to be incorporated throughout all age groups. Music can be used to help students understand that they have a responsibility to be active citizens and that they can create their own history.
ReplyDeleteIt means that individuals do not recognize that they have the ability to make a change instead they leave it to people of higher influence. Lyrics can help because they allow the individual to express their opinions and thoughts. And those who study lyrics can relate and move others to create a change.
ReplyDeleteUsing music within the classroom helps connect students with their understanding and experiences with different genres of music. Numerous students spend hours listing to music and utilizing this experience with music will help connect students with the historical meaning and context behind many of the songs we hear on the radio. For example, Green Day sings songs that address topics like equality, technology, and media. It is important to connect student's prior knowledge of a song and connect that knowledge to further meaning and understanding of the context in which the song is being presented. Lyrics are important because they connect students with global issues such as war, hunger, and equality.
ReplyDeleteStudents can use song lyrics to realize the importance of individual acts and their effect on society. Based on the quote, students don't feel that they can make a difference if they're not an important leader.
ReplyDeleteStudents do not feel like their voices are heard enough or are important enough. This explains why they credit societal changes to leaders and not to themselves or their peers. Listening to songs that they can relate to will help them feel like they are an important part of society and not just a bystander.

ReplyDeleteStudents do not realize that they have an impact on society and the changes that take place with their creativity and ideas. We always discuss the huge changes that took place in history because of people like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and MLK Jr, but we rarely discuss the actions of all the "little people" that really are responsible for the changes. We rarely discuss the actions that each individual citizen has to take to bring about the changes that these "important" people have spoken about. Music is a medium that is well received, and much liked by the younger citizens of this country. There are a lot of musicians that also speak about politics, and what the average citizen can do to make a change. These songs can be used to show students that people do believe in them, and that they can be responsible for a positive change in our country.

ReplyDeleteMusic lyrics help to identify the times of those important people and what they did. It helps students understand the role of the everyday person in the important event.
