Today we discussed the value of integrating photographs in the elementary classroom. Based on the readings and class discussions, justify how photographs can allow elementary students to perceive differences in a nonthreatening ways and explain how this promotes civic competence.
Showing photographs to students allows them to see how people who are "different" from them live. Using strategies such as observing and inferring, students can take those "differences" and change them into similarities to themselves. This way, stereotypes and prejudices can begin to fall and living together and civil citizens may becomes easier. (relating to global awareness)
ReplyDeleteBy looking at photos students can find ways to relate themselves to the events or the people in the photo. They can use their own perceptions and use critical thinking.
ReplyDeleteThis promotes civic competence because it builds compassion and understanding of people around the world. It makes them think of ways they are different however it also shows that in a way they are similar.
I think that photographs in the elementary classroom has great value. It allows students to perceive differences in a non-threatening way because it allows them to see the situations, yet they are far enough removed from them that there is no fear of the differences presented in the pictures. It allows them to really look at the picture and observe things without having to be in the situation. Through this students can see how someone who looks so different can be so similiar to them. This breaks down stereotypes and opens students' eyes to accept people who are different from them. This leads into promoting civic competence because it leads students into having an acceptance off all people no matter their situation or difference.
ReplyDeleteUsing photographs is beneficial because it gives students a visual representation of a topic. It gives all students the same image to work with and interpret, although their interpretations may be different. Using photographs helps students understand different topics more thoroughly and allow them to perceive similarities and differences in the world around us.
ReplyDeletePictures give the students a visual image of the differences in people. The pictures are just an image, not the actual situation, so it is less threatening. As they gain the information that can be attained, they will eventually become less stereotypical/prejudiced.
ReplyDeleteby showing photos students can talk collectively about issues and make inferances about what they are seeing. They can compare and contrast together possibly talking about someone they do not know, making it easier to talk openly about issues
ReplyDeleteUsing photographs in the classroom allows for students to view history through someone else's point of view at that time. It also allows them to go back in time and see what life was like. By viewing photographs, students can be taught not to stereotype individuals but look at the similarities.
ReplyDeleteUsing photographs to allow students to see differences in a nonthreatening way because they can see that there is not many differences from them. When the children can learn to think of differences in a nonthreatening way they will be able to be bettere citizens and be able to pass this knowledge on to others and as they grow up.
ReplyDeletePhotos do not have feelings so students can feel free to comment on them with their true impressions without censoring. Photos can be responded to in many ways including class discussion, art, written response and many other mediums. Using photos to introduce difficult problems can be an easy way to show your students these ideas.

The students can relate to the photos and see themselves in the people in the photos. They can see the emotions in the faces of the people in the photos. They will be able to be more critical thinkers and not just spew out the info we feed them.
ReplyDeleteUsing pictures is a good way to help the visual learners. I wish more of my teachers would have used pictures. Pictures can help students to connect events or whatever to their own lives or culture. Love visual representation.
ReplyDeletestudents are able to see the physical definition of segregation or discrimination. this gives them a sense of empathy and they should be able to connect something in their lives. being able to use the photographs will be the most graphic level of understanding behind seeing it in person.
ReplyDeleteStudents can see pictures of cultures around the world and discussions can be held on similarities and differences among cultures, based on photographs. This promotes civic competence by creating awaresness of these differences, while also pointing out similarities.
ReplyDeleteBy using photos in the classroom, students are given the chance to see people and places that they do not get to see around them on a daily basis. It gives them a chance to see different types of people and places and what they look like. THe students can make connections to their life and what they have in common with the people in the pictures or the place in the picture/
ReplyDeletePhotographs allow students to be able to peek into other cultures around the world. This allows them to be more of a global citizen when they are educated and able to view people and cultures from all the around the world
ReplyDeletePictures can help students focus on the similarities between themselves and other cultures. By focusing on the similarities, students help develop a global perspective and their civic competence.
ReplyDeleteShowing photographs in history will encourage students to see differences in non threatening ways and this will encourage a students civic competence because they will be more interested in researching issues and candidates and participating in voting in order to protect the rights of all people
ReplyDeletePosting pictures for students to view of people who have differences allows them not only to see the differences but also the similarities. Students are able ot talk about and discuss what they think are differnt from themselves and similar. Teachers can aid in theis by first having the class list observations from the pictures and then discuss the lists that are made as a class.
ReplyDeletePictures are a great way to utilize visual representation and foster student's critical thinking skills and communication skills. Having students make connections through the use of picture timelines or just showing pictures that represent a specific ethnicity or culture help students discuss similarities and differences within their own and different cultures.
ReplyDeleteteachers can use photographs to promote open discussion among the students. this allows the students to find several cultural similarities.
ReplyDeleteBy using pictures to first focus on the similarities students have with others you can them ask them to look at how they are different.
