  6. It is a very broad subject. It is hard for any person to have all of this knowledge not to mention teach it. It could be very overwhelming for teachers and that could be why elementary students don't get much Social Studies in the classroom.

    Effective citizen- gain information on different canidates by doing research and vote as an informed person. Understand the different social classes. Be empathetic to other people who live around you.

    Voting: knowing about the candidates (need to research); show the students how to effectively research - is what they are saying on the news lining up with their actions?

    Expectations of excellence: still relevant today, many students didn't know own states, need to know cultural norms.

    What does is mean to be an effective citizen? vote(know about canidates positions and parties values and stances on issues) empathy towards other groups of people and various cultures.

    anything and everything CAN be history. Everything is a documentation of the progress and growth of our country and more importantly our world.

    NCSS- helped to create this melting pot. (assimilate everyone into the American culture.)

Disciplines that fall under Social Studies- Economics, history, geography, government, sociology, psychology, anthropology, race/gender, civics, political science, math, science, literature > Makes it difficult to have a large depth of knowledge because elementary teachers have to teach all discipline

    NCSS - National Council for the Social Studies > founded in 1921 to teach immigrants the way of American life and to help children working in factories learn the ways of society

  28. Literature is a big part of Social Studies because of the references we use a lot of times comes from civics or history.

    The NCSS was the product of trying to teach people the culture and the laws and way of life as an American citizen. They helped create standards, curriculum and strategies that should be taught in schools for social studies.
