Some disciplines that fall under social studies are geography, economics, history, gender/race, culture, civics, political science, math, literature, science, government.
It is a very broad subject. It is hard for any person to have all of this knowledge not to mention teach it. It could be very overwhelming for teachers and that could be why elementary students don't get much Social Studies in the classroom.
